Recent years have seen a series of bitter struggles over monuments and memorials related to slavery and the Civil War.  In Charlottesville, Virginia, the decision to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee prompted a march by white supremacists that ended with one woman dead.  What are the historical roots of these struggles?  What do they tell us about American society today?
